Client Background: International Enterprise Sourcing & Procurement SaaS Platform
The client is a multinational procurement software provider which sought to expand its reach into new industries and boost their e-sourcing software’s market visibility.
Specializing in facilitating source-to-contact RFI’s, RFP’s, and RFQ’s through their proprietary software, they provide their services to mid-market corporations seeking a smoother and more lucrative e-procurement process with other providers.
They had little visibility in SEO and wanted to establish their services digitally and were attempting to gain any SERP traction. To that end, their Head of Marketing reached out to Why Stuff Sucks for guidance.

Over the course of 12 months, we were able to build out their online infrastructure, gain a web of authority-driving backlinks, and write/publish articles on topics that likely customers were searching for which increased their traffic.
When their Head of Marketing left, his successor took over about 9 months into our contract, and we completed the last 3 months of our work together. After our engagement, the client was happy with their SEO growth.
The Challenge: Little SEO Traffic & Rankings

In spite of the strengths of their software offering, the client had a major digital roadblock: nearly 0 net traffic.

Without any existing online presence to build upon, they reached out to us to grow their traffic and saw considerable growth over the next several months.
Measuring The Gap With A SaaS SEO Competitor Analysis

A preliminary audit into their website yielded promising opportunities. In spite of the existing lack of traffic, there was no shortage of potential keyword opportunities that they could capitalize on.

When analyzing the client’s direct competitors, we located 2,147 keywords that they were not currently ranking for, leaving the field wide open for where they could expand.

How A Technical SEO Audit Identified Weakness in the SaaS Site’s Foundation

A technical audit of their site revealed numerous structural issues both on-site and off including:
- Missing canonical tags
- 404 error pages
- Missing “breadcrumb” url tags
- Absent robots.txt files
- Sitemap not submitted to Google Search Console
… among other issues. All of these contributed to Google’s web crawlers struggling to parse and comprehend the site’s information, which results in Google deeming a page otherwise full of insightful information as a weak page unworthy of rankings.

We didn’t just send them a list of items to fix and call it a day. Rather we prioritized the issues for them based on what effort would yield the most impact.
- We checked 65 potential issue areas and identified 17 that were worth considering.
- 11 of those were the highest priority and were recommended to work on first.
- 6 were secondary priority and should be fixed after the 11.

While it was an indirectly related issue, we pointed out some review platforms their competitors were on that the client wasn’t. These days reviews are becoming increasingly important to SEO performance.
Content Strategy In Action: SEO Planning & Technical Revision

As the client started with minimal content on the site, Why Stuff Sucks built a plan to establish a strong baseline off which to grow for the site. This plan involves the following steps:
- Create product pages in the main menu
By creating pages outlining their various products/features and adding them to their site, they gained a degree of structure that helped both web crawlers and prospects to navigate their site and understand their software’s various and unique strengths.

- Create new blog pages
In order to show Google that the client’s site was living and active, we began the creation of SEO optimized outlines for their team to populate with topically relevant copy. By publishing a handful of new blogs per month, they were able to signal both relevant experience in their market.

- Create longform infographic to gain authority + attract backlinks
By designing an informative infographic spanning the height of 8-10 panels/sections, the client created a unique piece of educational art on their site, demonstrating a creativity of thought and a deeper understanding of their subject matter than a simple blog, all while gaining more backlinks.
- Obtain quality backlinks
A backlink campaign was employed for its dual effect of giving potential leads an additional avenue of finding their way to their site while also showing Google that high-value publications considered them to be an expert on their subject matter.
- Add relevant internal links
As a reflection of curating backlinks, adding relevant internal links to blogs and service pages allows web crawlers to comprehend how the page fits together and allows highly performing pages to contribute to the success of less successful pages.

The Reliable Impact of Relevant Link Building Given The Site’s Lack of Them

Our backlink gap audit showed their competitors were eating their lunch with their competitors having 10,000+ more links than they did.
In order to boost the client’s net-wide performance, we underwent a backlinking campaign to establish links to them on various high-authority, relevant sites. In addition, we overdelivered the value of those links by $5,500 if you had to buy them from other reputable sources.
The Results: Growing Organic Traffic from SEO

In the 12 months after partnering with us, the client’s online traffic grew and continued to grow for years to follow. And all of this was highly focused on topics that likely buyers of their software were searching for.
They saw:
- A 1,260% growth to SEO impressions (yes, that’s the real #)
- 405% boost to SEO clicks
- An extensive, quality backlink profile and stronger technical foundation that set them up for future years of SEO growth

As an agency, we don't refer client work out lightly as our name is attached to whoever we bring in, so I like to find trusted and honest partners. We've sent SEO work to Miles and the Why Stuff Sucks team, including referring Lightman Immigration, and have always been so happy with the outcome. Miles is straight with you, explains the reasoning behind what he's doing, outlines limitations, and keeps up with where search is actually heading instead of running a five-year-old playbook. He's also one of the few people I've come across building real strategy around AI search (AEO/GEO) — treating it as something to measure and win. One of our referred clients saw AI search sessions grow 37% year over year off that approach which has obviously made us very popular!
